Project Management vs Project Manager

I recently came back from an interview and had an interesting question thrown to me from the interviewer – What is Project Management?

I was taken back to my first post on ProjectManager.net – Key Elements to Project Management.

• Scheduling,
• Process Management- Software Process (SDLC, SCRUM, Agile, XP, etc), Bug Processing, Triage, Localization, etc.
• Risk Management,
• Requirement, etc.

But, I also fell into the mental trap of mixing Project Management and Project Manager roles and content which in turn gave me the idea on what to write on my next post. Project Management vs Project Manager.

For me, Project Manager is a professional in the field of project management. They are the facilitator/representative in taking the project from conception to execution. They are the ones that have the right set of skills to successfully lead the herd of cats to their destination, this means that they are responsible in the planning and execution of the project. They use the key elements of Project Management as a tool to not only help accomplish their task but also use it as a checklist.

Whereas Project Management is the careful planning and organizing resources to accomplish a specific objective, for example, build a software product. As mentioned earlier, it includes scheduling (or project planning) which encompasses define your project’s objectives, tasks and how to achieve your objectives taking into account resource management (requirement, technology, and people), risk management (troubles or opportunities you might encounter in your plan), including determining the budget and time frame required for completion.

What in your opinion is the difference between Project Management and Project Manager?
