I just woke up today to be surprised that my followers/following counts dropped to 0. It appears that Twitter has a follow/unfollow bug on their hands whereby it has forced Twitter to reset all their followers/following to 0.
The feed appears normal but just the counter is broken.
It appears that the folks at Twitter are working on the issue so in the meantime if you find a tweeter you want to follow, jot their name down and follow them when the issue has been resolved.
What caused this bug?
Well it appears that Twitter had an embarrassing bug on their hands - users could force anyone to follow them. This basically means that anyone who exploits this bug can view your tweets in their feed – at least until the issue has been resolved. It seems that when they were trying to fix this bug they introduced a new one whereby users follow/unfollow numbers were reset.
Who discovered the bug?
It seems that a Turkish twitter users who has no technical Twitter knowledge found this bug by tweeting ‘Accept pwnz’ and to find @pwnz was suddenly following him. He wrote a blog post on this exploit and one of his visitors tried contacting Twitter regarding this bug – but no response.
Why now?
I guess when you have someone like Conan O’Brian complaining how he went from 1 to 194 following without his consent and various blogs commenting on this bug – Twitter employees are bound to finally take some action. In the meantime for all twitters in the #thedaytwitterexploded and #twitterstolemyfollowers -its not you, everyone is experiencing the same problem
